Murdoch University was my choice for postgraduate studies, as the school would provide me with a globally-recognised credential and an enriching university experience.

I decided to pursue this Master’s programme as I have a strong interest in Data Science. It deals with huge volumes of data and uses modern tools and techniques to uncover unseen patterns, derive meaningful insights, and make operational decisions. The programme curriculum is very structured, and its relevance to my current job scope has helped me to add value to my work.

The University provides excellent student support with its online platform, where relevant resources are easily available. For example, I can access the online Murdoch University Library anytime to look up journals and articles for my research. The unit coordinators are also easily contactable via email, should one have any queries on the modules.

Studying at Kaplan also provides me with a flexible study schedule, which is important as I am working full-time. These positive factors were what gave me the confidence to embark on the programme. Undertaking part-time post-graduate studies while juggling with full-time work and family life is no walk in the park. Ever since embarking on this programme, I have become more disciplined and effective in managing my time.

I wanted to add value to myself by learning relevant knowledge and skills, so after researching, I decided to pursue a Double Master’s Degree (Master of Business Administration and Master of Human Resources Management) with Murdoch University as it was the best choice for me.

I think the Postgraduate Degree was necessary to help me get ahead in my career. Without a doubt, it has given me an edge over my colleagues. Having the Degree is a justification to my capabilities as an individual for future career opportunities.

During the programme, I juggled work and studies by managing my time and priorities carefully. This experience helped me in many areas. My time management improved, along with my ability to prioritise. Murdoch University’s Double Master’s Degree offering was too good to miss. With the same duration in a typical single Master’s programme, I could achieve two such Masters Degrees and proficiency in two domains.

The dual programme is meaningful to current working professionals, as gone are the days when one could be content with strong knowledge in one domain. Now, a Double Masters will give us the needed advantage.

The school offers flexible study options and personalised courses, which are important to me as a working adult with commitments. Having the luxury to personalise the courses lets me manage my time better. For instance, knowing I would be working on a data-related project later in the year, I enrolled in a data course beforehand to prepare myself.

Even with virtual learning (due to the pandemic), there is no compromise on the quality of teaching. The lecturers have a vast knowledge of the subjects and the ability to impart relevant academic and personal experience to students. The programme also encourages class engagement.

The initial motivation to pursue a Postgraduate Degree was based on a personal challenge to better myself academically. But upon completing my programme, I have found myself constantly applying what I had learnt in my daily work, especially in managing the company.

The programme was challenging at first, but with work-from-home (WFH) being the default mode of working at my company and classes transitioning online, I saved a lot of time on commuting and juggled work and studies better. I still remember the night when I received an email saying that I had been accepted into the Murdoch University MBA programme. It was like a dream come true! I strongly believe that this programme can inspire me to combine sport and business for ideas that will enhance the sporting fraternity in Singapore.

Of all the subjects, I liked the Business, Society and the Environment unit the most, as it illuminates serious global issues like climate change resulting from mankind’s crossing of planetary boundaries, and how the government and businesses can work hand in hand to address these whole-of-nation issues collectively.

Leading the Engaged Enterprise unit is another favourite of mine, as it challenged my mental model and changed my initial thoughts about the idea of real leadership. I also learnt to manage the creative tension between my vision and current reality, to help me achieve my goals.

During the course, it was challenging to balance studies, family responsibilities and work commitments – especially when many deadlines would clash. Thankfully, through the programme, I learned to master “ambidexterity”, which is the ability to manage paradoxes and be efficient in one’s management of today's demands as well as being adaptive to changes in the environment simultaneously.

To me, obtaining an MBA Degree is about personal development, acquiring knowledge and networking. I am in my 40s, but in the spirit of lifelong learning, age is just a number. I believe the five distinctions I have achieved in my transcript says it all.

My advice to those thinking of pursuing a Postgraduate Degree is to be mentally prepared to live a period of your life like most people will not, so that you can enjoy a life most people cannot. The most difficult part of the journey is to overcome the inertia in taking that first step. Once you overcome it, the rest is history.

What drove me to pursue a Postgraduate Degree was the desire to remain competitive in the market, to upgrade myself, and for career progression. My job requires me to work extensively with C-suite leadership, including the marketing, finance, corporate strategy, human resources and operations teams. Getting a Postgraduate Degree has been on my checklist for some time and it was one of my New Year resolutions for 2020. I decided to pursue the degree to gain deeper insights into the human resources industry and increase my HR competency. As HR roles are becoming increasingly specialised and diverse, having a double masters would help me get ahead.

As a HR professional, attaining a Master’s Degree in Human Resources Management would help me stay updated on the current HR trends, and increase my expertise in the different focus areas of HR. This is extremely valuable as I will be able to apply my learning directly to my role.

The programme is relevant to the changing business environment, with real-world case studies and discussion topics that enhance our critical thinking skills and teach us to be great problem-solvers! Postgraduate studies can be very demanding, especially when you also work full-time. But I have managed to juggle between work and studies by developing a realistic study plan and schedule. Overall, it has been a great experience – productive, educational, and fun!

My reason for pursuing a postgraduate degree was a bit different. Since I am already at the top of my organisation, pursuing the MBA would not have elevated my position at work. As cliché as it sounds, I wanted to hone the necessary professional skills and foster my personal development.

I believe that postgraduate studies are not just a means to a better job or different career path. For students with a genuine passion for a particular topic or area of research – for me, that would be my wellness business – advanced degrees provide the ideal platform to delve deeper.

In classes, my participation was sincerely welcomed. I learnt that you do not always have to be right. In fact, it is good to be wrong sometimes – you will always be learning more and advancing your ideas. My favourite module was Business, Society and the Environment. I thoroughly enjoyed engaging in discursive debates on climate change, as well as how businesses have impacted the climate. Tasked with heading an entire business unit in an international aerospace company, Gregory Mariotto is responsible for the Profit and Loss (P&L), manpower and operations management of his unit. Greg (as he prefers to be called) is also very involved in developing strategic plans with the company’s senior management.

Having been through 2 retrenchments in my career, I am a great believer of “future-proofing” my job security through constant upskilling and learning. Pursuing an MBA has always been one of my life goals. The MBA programme has helped me get ahead in my career, and offered varied learning experiences through mutual sharing with my group mates. Equipped with only a Bachelor of Business (majoring in Economics and Finance), I soon felt that an Accounting specific qualification was necessary to advance my education and career to the next level.

I acquired a postgraduate qualification in MBA (Master of Business Administration) with Murdoch University to raise the bar of my educational objectives and career progression. In hopes to deepen my professional knowledge that would allow me to perform my job more efficiently and add value to the company, I enrolled into Murdoch University Master of Professional Accounting.

As Finance Manager, my responsibilities already include budgeting, accounting, and financial reporting. Murdoch’s enriching curriculum provided me a helicopter view on a finance perspective, rather than a specific field such as Accounting practices. Understanding the basic requirements and principles of accounting, and having a broader knowledge of financial perspectives helped me and my counterparts evaluate financial situations in an objective manner.

Reflecting on my experience, I not only gained in-depth knowledge in accounting but also new soft skills in people and work management such as coaching others. For a start, the Management Accounting, Accounting Theory and Governance, Accounting Processes, and Taxation Principles modules provided her a new perspective on making informed managerial decisions and report to local authorities. I have advanced my career in the medical industry over the past 16 years, working in both regional and local subsidiary roles, and in different functions. "Education". A word so commonly used and so important in our 21st century, yet it has a different meaning to each one of us. Looking back at my past 2 years studying the MBA course, I am filled with gratefulness, mainly for the privilege to expand the knowledge and skills which are applicable and relevant in my vocation. Being a full-time working adult while taking an MBA was no easy task as I needed to find a new momentum in my daily routines. However, it is through these challenges that I am also thankful for the meaningful experiences and professionalism that Murdoch University at Kaplan has offered.

The curriculum and pedagogical approaches adopted by the University throughout my MBA course have made me re-evaluate the guiding principles behind my perspectives. Education is more than attaining a qualification. It is, for me, the platform offered by an educational institute to individuals who want to make a positive impact on both their personal lives and society. Education challenges your own assumptions and questions your own thought process, which helps to form new knowledge.

I believe that education is also about learning to appreciate diversity in our society. This is important to me as I meet people from all walks of life daily in my work. Being able to help them meant that I first needed to upgrade my skills, and this was what motivated me to pursue the MBA. Equipping myself with these new skills has helped me to better engage my team and clients.

Many have said that networking is the best part of the MBA programme and I agree. The friendships forged and the discussions we had enabled me to broaden my perspectives. I particularly enjoyed the Leading the Engaged Enterprise module. As a team lead, I find myself always aiming to inspire and nurture my team to fulfil their highest potential. The insights gained from this module have definitely helped me with that.

Benjamin Franklin once said, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest “. Some advice I will give to those who are considering a Postgraduate Degree is to be certain of your reasons for doing so. Take some time to list them down and talk to experienced individuals. Having been trained in the hard sciences as a doctor, I felt that I needed to gain a business perspective of the healthcare industry as I was working as an Assistant Medical Director at the time, and later, as a Senior Manager (Operations).

Thus, I decided to pursue an MBA programme to acquire the theoretical fundamentals on running a business. The decision to pursue the programme at Murdoch University was a fruitful one, as it allowed me to function more efficiently as a healthcare administrator. The technical skills I learned through modules such as Accounting, and Business Finance allowed me to better make sense of balance sheets and profit and loss (P&L) statements, which I encounter in my course of work.

What I like most about the programme is that it gave me the flexibility to complete the modules at my own pace. Additionally, the modules were well-taught by the lecturers, who were both knowledgeable and engaging.
